Linux VMWare Guide
Linux operating system is becoming increasingly
number of supporters and has already begun an offensive on workstations and PCs. There is, however, one big obstacle to
further spread of the OS - the habit of the majority
PC users work with Microsoft Office. Package this in spite of
that it is often criticized, is popular and, admittedly,
deserved. Therefore, even working continuously with the operating system Linux, willy-nilly
have to deal with files created with programs from
M S Office, and stored in their own
formats: DOC, XLS, MDB. What is to be followers OS Linux? As
organize communication with the world adherents OS Windows?

Answering this question may say that
some office suites for Linux, for example, KOffice,
or a word processor AbiWord, able to work with files MS. But
yet to achieve 100% compatibility in this matter could not.
You can, of course, install two operating systems in different partitions and
reboot into Windows, when you need to work with
files from Microsoft Office But it is very inconvenient. Same
inconvenient and various programs, Decoders, transforming
doc-files into html or other open format, accessible to programs
under Linux. (With the advent of package OpenOffice.org
The situation begins to change.

In short, community advocates Linux
faced with the problem. And it is, of course, this problem is solved and
even in several ways. Their basic idea is simple -
create an emulator of Windows, running under Linux and allows
run programs that OS. But solving this problem, each
selects different. As far as I know, the greatest success in
implementation of the idea of an emulator today
made by two companies: VMware, which created a system of virtual machines
VMware (Linux VM), and the product Netraverse Win4Lin. Both products
actually let you run on your computer a second operating
system, simultaneously is already working with the base operating system Linux, under
administration which continues to operate a physical computer. This
chapter, we consider the system of virtual machines from VMware.

What is a "virtual computer"
Virtual PC - special
program that runs on Linux and modeling the physical computer
processor-based Intel x86. Monitor virtual machine
window is a graphical environment X Window, in which shall
output. Fig. 18.1 shows
looks like Windows NT 4.0, running on a virtual computer
running OS Linux (or Linux VM server).
Note:
I must
immediately say that the standalone version of Virtual Machine
developed by VMware (Linux VM ware), and for the case when the base OS
is a Windows NT/2000, so that you can and run Linux in a window
gui Windows. However, this option is not
considered.
VM for Linux "built" from
the next set of virtual devices:
-
Virtual IDE and SCSI hard drives;
-
Virtual CD-ROM;
-
Standard floppy disk drive;
-
Controller IDE-hard disks Intel 82371 PCI Bus
Master, supports two primary (primary) and two secondary
(Secondary) IDE-drive;
-
SCSI-disk adapter that is compatible with BusLogic BT-958;
-
Standard PCI graphics adapter,
-
101/102-key standard keyboard, PS/2-sovmestimaya
Mouse;
-
Network card AMD PCNET Family Ethernet adapter (PCI-ISA);
-
Serial ports COM1-COM4,
-
Parallel ports LPT1-LPT2;
-
Sound card compatible with Sound Blaster 16.
This set of virtual devices is different from
set of devices the real computer that runs
virtual machine (except for some devices, for example,
CPU and keyboard), and does not depend on the latter. If
operating system installed directly inside
virtual machine, then in the process of installing these devices
determined correctly. At "power on"
Virtual PC (which is done using a special button
Power On / Off in the menu-emulator), is seen as a BIOS
exercise testing "hardware" and even as
on the physical computer, you can enter the program Setup, to specify
or change my BIOS. In the virtual machine can
install any operating system and work with her usual
way.
Naturally, the two operating systems simultaneously running
on one physical computer, one way or another struggling real
basic computer resources, and therefore the requirements for him enough
high. Firm-developer formulates these requirements as follows
way:
-
Pentium II 266MHz or above , RAM
least 64 MB;
-
Video adapter that is supported by the server XFree86 (for
all the advantages of full-screen mode);
-
As the base operating system can be used
Linux with kernel 2.0.32 or higher, glibc library version of glibc2
to glibc6 (with glibc1 not work) for SMP-system kernel must be
version 2.2.0 or higher;
-
For VMware requires X-server, and recommended
XFree86-3.3.4 or higher.
